Discovering the Heart of Venice
Venice is a city that seems familiar even to those who have never walked its narrow streets. We’ve all seen images of its grand palaces, majestic churches, and celebrated museums. Many people know the small details too—how it’s called “La Serenissima,” that the Grand Canal is a waterway, not a street, and that over 400 bridges link its canals. Yet, despite all this knowledge, how well do we truly understand Venice? It remains a place of mystery, where uncovering its essence requires looking beyond the obvious. Locals like the Romanelli family, who run the charming Hotel Flora, can show you the way.

Uncovering the Hidden Gems
Staying at Hotel Flora feels like an invitation to see the true Venice. The palazzo, dating back to the 17th century, once housed a painting school where the master might have known Titian himself. The moment you step inside, the atmosphere transports you to another time. I loved the rich interior, with its elegant stucco work, exposed beams, and mahogany beds. The damask wallpaper and antique chandeliers add to the sense of history, making it feel like you’ve stepped into an old Venetian story. Just next door, Palazzo Contarini Fasan was home to a woman who inspired Shakespeare’s Desdemona in Othello. It’s these stories that make staying here feel special—like you’re living a small piece of Venice’s artistic heritage.
Experiencing Venice Like a Local
The Romanelli family does more than offer a place to stay; they provide a gateway to the city’s hidden treasures. Before heading out, I recommend seeking their advice—these Venetians know how to reveal the magic behind the city’s façade. Whether you’re sailing through the lagoon on a traditional fishing boat, exploring tucked-away art galleries, or savoring homemade Italian dishes in a local trattoria, they’ll guide you to experiences that tourists often miss. For me, their tips turned a typical sightseeing trip into a deeper, more authentic adventure.
The Courtyard Escape
One of my favorite moments at Hotel Flora was unwinding in its secluded courtyard—a tranquil oasis in the midst of Venice’s lively streets. It’s the kind of spot where time seems to stand still, a perfect hideaway to sip a coffee or enjoy a good book. The staff’s warmth and the courtyard’s charm make it a place you’ll want to linger, soaking in the Venetian atmosphere.
Getting to Hotel Flora
Reaching Hotel Flora is easy and scenic. From Venice Airport, take the Alilaguna shuttle to St. Mark’s Square, followed by a short stroll through the picturesque streets (just 550 yards/500 meters). It’s a delightful way to begin your stay, setting the tone for your Venetian journey.
Where Comfort Meets History
Hotel Flora offers 43 beautifully decorated rooms, each with its own bathroom and modern amenities like Wi-Fi. The Romanelli family has managed the hotel since 1964, and their dedication shows in every detail. Although the hotel only serves a classic Italian breakfast, the staff is more than happy to recommend local restaurants where you can taste the best of Venetian cuisine.
A Warm Welcome Awaits
The best part of staying at Hotel Flora is the incredibly friendly and personal service. The Romanellis make you feel like a valued guest from the moment you arrive.
For me, their genuine hospitality was the highlight of my visit—something rare and priceless in a city as popular as Venice.
