The Man Behind the Hat: Carlo Cinque’s Timeless Style
Carlo Cinque, easily recognizable by his signature wide-brimmed straw hat, was the epitome of effortless style—so much so that even in simple shorts and sandals, he turned heads. His legendary parties were the stuff of dreams, drawing in Hollywood stars who couldn’t resist his charisma. But beyond his social prowess, Carlo was a true visionary who single-handedly transformed Positano’s landscape by creating Il San Pietro, the finest hotel with the most breathtaking views on the Amalfi coast.

A Visionary’s Dream
Built in the 1960s on terraces of a rock that juts dramatically into the sea, Il San Pietro is nothing short of a marvel. Carlo, a self-taught architect and designer, relied on the guidance of just an electrical engineer, taking on every other role himself. It’s impressive, if not somewhat audacious, how he managed to blend functionality and beauty so seamlessly. Decades before the term “guest relations manager” became a staple in hospitality, Carlo was already setting the gold standard in guest care, making everyone who stayed feel uniquely valued.
Continuing the Legacy
Today, his niece Virginia and her sons carry on this legacy, which is no small feat. They’ve delicately updated the property without compromising its timeless charm—a balancing act that speaks volumes about their respect for Carlo’s vision. The new ceramic tiles on the panorama terrace, designed in a 17th-century marine style, are a beautiful touch that enhances rather than alters the hotel’s aesthetic. Add to that a spa tucked beneath fragrant lemon trees and a Michelin-starred restaurant that elevates traditional cooking to new heights, and it’s clear that they’re not just maintaining Il San Pietro—they’re perfecting it.
Honoring the Founder
One of my favorite touches is the second restaurant, “Carlino,” named in honor of the man who started it all. And then there’s the lift that connects the reception to the restaurant, spanning a dramatic 288 feet in height—its shaft carved directly into the rock. It’s a bold and personal signature on an already extraordinary place, and it perfectly encapsulates Carlo Cinque’s hands-on approach and enduring passion for hospitality.
